IF's Independence is everything you'd want out of a custom steel touring bike. Designed as durable loaded touring bike. If you are going to the Tierra del Fuego or going car-less the independence will take you there. It�s duragle and comfortable because each tube used is spec'd to the rider�s size, riding style and weight.
Three water bottle mounts, a full set of rack and fender mounts (front and rear), and a pump peg, are standard. But you have options galore when building an IF. If you want it, they can do it.
Don't forget about custom paint too! IF delivers in a timely manner; when they say it's going to take 4-5 weeks, it'll be here in 4-5 weeks. No waiting for six or more months for your custom frame.

The industry's current gold standard for touring bikes, the Surly Long Haul Trucker, outshines everything else in its category. As Surly blatantly puts it, "If you want to carry a lot of stuff while riding your bike long distances, you'd be hard pressed to find a better bike than the Long Haul Trucker."

The LHT has a tubeset and geometry specifically tailored to the needs of a bike that's going to be loaded with 100 lbs of gear yet can still be ridden bare without feeling like your riding a yacht. There is a braze on for just about everything you could ever want (pump peg, 3 water bottles, racks/fenders front and rear, extra spokes on a chainstay - nifty!) yet the frame doesn't look or feel laden with unnecessary features. The larger sizes (56 and above) are available with 700c or 26" wheels while the smaller sizes (54 and below) have 26" wheels. This allows for an optimal weight distribution, center of gravity and handling for every size and also allows smaller riders to both easily straddle the top tube and avoid having toe overlap - even with fenders on the bike.

Equipment is kept practical and simple, yet is very high quality for a bike of this pricepoint. Keeping with the touring mentality, loose ball XT hubs are easily servicable yet have good seals to keep the grime out while the Dura-ace barend shifters provide unparalleled reliability as well as an option to easily switch from indexed to friction shifting in case your derailleur goes South without a suitable replacement. That isn't likely to happen, however, as Shimano's XT derailleur spec'd on the bike is designed to see years of hard use on a mountain bike where it is regularly exposed to conditions much worse than your likely to see on your average tour. Intelligent choices are made elsewhere on the bike as well such as cheap yet functional Tektro cantilevers and levers, strong Alex rims, a basic yet high quality crank from Sugino with tried and true square taper interface, and aluminum bar stem and seatpost in a refreshing silver (which is the new black).

Soma Double Cross Dream Commuter

We built up this Soma Double Cross show bike as our dream commuter bike. It's got just about everything you can think of, and a bunch of stuff you did not realize you needed.

The frame is a 54cm disk brake compatible Soma Double Cross. The wheels are built with a Shimano Dynamo hub in the front, XT in the rear, Salsa Delgado cross rims, and Schwalbe Kojak tires. The Shimano Alfine hydraulic disk brakes provide lots of stopping power, and will keep working well no mater how wet it gets or if you decide to get a bit muddy. The Sycip Wonder Bar, leather grips, and Cardiff Wessex saddle will keep you comfortable. Shifting of the 14-25 straight block cassette is by a nine speed Shimano Dura Ace shifter mounted on a Paul Components Thumbie. The SRAM Courier 300 crank is light and stiff, and the Paul Components chain keeper makes sure that the chain never comes off. The grippy MKS touring lite pedals make sure your feet never come off either. There is a Nitto R-15 rear rack to carry your load, and Honjo hammered fenders to keep you dry and looking good. A Busch Muller Lumotec IQ Cyo R N Plus lights your way and will even stay on for 5+ minutes when you get there. We also added a Pletscher double kickstand for good measure.

Soma Buena Vista Mixte

The Soma Buena Vista Mixte frame is versatile, good looking, and well priced. Soma designed the Buena Vista with sport touring geometry. It will happily go fast or cruise slow with a big load. The low top tube allows the frame to be easy on easy off and makes this a great frame for building a cargo bike. Build it up with a drop, moustache, swept back, or riser bars what ever bike you want to turn this frame into it's ready. The only question is are you man (or woman) enough for the Buena Vista?
The frame is built of butted Tange Infinity CrMo, and includes a lugged crown fork. The fork has lowrider (mid blade) mounts and eyelets at the dropouts.

The Buena Vista is available in 4 sizes - The 50, 54, and 58cm sizes are designed for 700c wheels with 57mm reach road brakes. The 42cm size is designed for 26" tires with 76mm reach brakes or 650b tires with 57mm reach road brakes

The Breezer Uptown 8 is the perfect bike for somebody looking to commute in comfort and style. It hides its many flourishes beneath a guise of simplicity and maybe even elegance. The nearly maintenance free Shimano Nexus 8 speed internally geared rear hub shifts flawlessly. The Shimano Dyno hub and AXA Basta LED lights ensure that each pedal stroke also lights up your path. The lights include "stand lite" so they will stay on for several minutes when you come to a stop which means that drivers will not only see you as you glide down the road on your new Breezer Uptown 8, but when you are stopped too. Surly's Big Dummy is a sport utility bike designed to carry a lot of stuff easily. The bike comes with Xtracyle's V-Rack bags and snapdeck. You can easily carry 6-8 bags of groceries, a couple of passengers, camping gear, or whatever you can think of. It's the bicycle equivalent of a pick-up truck.

The Big Dummy is shorter, has less rolling resistance, more manuverable, and more versatile than a bike and trailer. It has a much larger cargo capacity than a rack or racks, and the weight is low and centered between the wheels. Xtracycle has accessories available designed to for everyting from kids, ladders, surfboards, or other bikes.

The Big Dummy rides well too much more like a standard bike than we expected. The wheelbase is longer than normal, but still much shorter than a tandem. The frame is stiff and strong despite the additional length. You won't find any unwanted creaking or swaying with this bike.

If you don't have a car or want to be able to make more trips by bike the Big Dummy will make your life easier.

In designing the Hyland Civia did not just take a road or mountain frame and convert it. The worked from the beginning to create a great commuting / town bike. The Hyland is a great combination of technology and aesthetics that results in a bike that has both performance and beauty. Features like sliding disc brakes mount dropouts and a specially developed cable shaft in the carbon fork the bike as nice to ride as it is nice on the eyes.

The Hyland�s lightweight aluminum frame is stiff, fast, durable and corrosion resistant. The carbon fork absorbs road shock to smooth the ride and lighten the bike. For the Hyland Civia has designed matching fenders and a chain guard to keep you clean and dry, and the bikes come with a custom tubular aluminum rack to carry your load.

The Hyland�s innovative hydroformed down tube features the cable tunnel; a recess for hydraulic brakes and cable housing that also provides extra frame stiffness. It makes cleaning easy, too. Simply undo the cable guides, slide the cables aside and wipe down the entire frame.

Civia has mated the Hyland frame with Shimano's excelent Alfine group. It is composed of Ultegra/XT level components including hydraulic brakes, external bearing crank with chainguard, 8 speed internaly geared hub, and a dynamo front hub.
